VA program focuses on patient safety

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

May 23, 2007

The VA's National Center for Patient Safety is sending experts out to help VA hospital staff with patient safety issues, according to a Wilmington (DE) News Journal article.

The visiting team focuses on breaking down hierarchies in the surgical setting, which helps nurses and other staff speak up when they have a patient safety concern. Flattening hierarchies is a staple of crew resource management and other team models that have been adopted in the healthcare industry.

The team will visit 130 VA hospitals to make its presentation and develop better patient safety skills with staff members, according to the article.
