University of Chicago directs uninsured patients with minor injuries to other facilities

As a means of making more money, the University of Chicago (UC) Medical Center has in recent years been steering uninsured, poor patients with minor injuries to other facilities, reports The Chicago Tribune. This practice is attracting criticism, especially from Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) who says that this institution is losing sight of the public service it is supposed to provide to the community, especially since it is tax exempt.
The hospital has stepped up its efforts to educate uninsured patients on how to receive adequate care for their ailments without using UC's emergency room, which is significantly more expensive, says the article.
