U.S. News blog: Cap nursing work hours

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

August 1, 2007

Avery Comarow on his U.S. News & World Report blog lobbied this week to have nurse work hours capped as a way to improve patient safety.

Writing in Comarow on Quality, he made the comparison to hospital residents, who had their work hours limited four years ago after it was discovered sleep deprivation had the same effect on residents as drunkenness.

Comarow also called for The Joint Commission to include worker fatigue as a National Patient Safety Goal.
