Today is National Time Out Day

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

June 20, 2007

The Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), The Joint Commission, and the American College of Surgeons are observing National Time Out Day today (June 20).

The day is designed to raise awareness of the surgical time out, which is a critical step toward increasing patient safety, according to the groups. Time outs are part of The Joint Commission's Universal Protocol to prevent surgical errors.

A free surgical toolkit developed by AORN is available on itsWeb site. The kit includes pocket cards, policy templates, FAQs from The Joint Commission and AORN, and other resources.
