Technology helps San Antonio hospitals reduce IV medication errors

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

July 11, 2007

Nurses and medical staff at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, TX, are using computerized infusion pumps to help catch IV medication errors before they reach the patient, according to a KENS 5-TV report.

Nurses and physicians enter the prescription information into the pump, which checks for errors, unusual dosages, and other abnormalities. An alarm sounds if there's a problem. The hope is that the system will provide another point for medical staff to stop and double-check the medication before administering it to the patient, according to the report.
