A study published in the June issue of the American Journal of Managed Care found that using simulation to improve patient safety can be further enhanced when performing the simulation in an actual work environment, rather than a simulation facility. The study also kept healthcare teams intact and used the technology and equipment that the staff involved would use during their daily work.
Researchers placed a team of healthcare providers in a large midwestern hospital in 2007 for the simulation used during this study. Process improvements to be made were identified during the simulation as well as threats to patient safety.
