A study released in the June 27 issue of the journal Quality and Safety in Health Care found that certain design factors at healthcare facilities can enhance patient safety. Specifically the study focused on the placement of hand sanitizer pumps in patient rooms and whether their placement had any correlation to their usage by clinicians.
The researchers found through simulation testing that when the hand sanitizer pumps were located in clear view of the physician while he or she was examining the patient, 53.8% used the pump. However, when the pump was not located in plain view only 11.5% of physicians sanitized their hands.
