South Carolina hospitals strained by influx of mentally ill patients

A lack of mental health facilities in South Carolina leaves many mentally ill patients in the emergency departments, in-patient beds, and intensive care units of the state's hospitals, reports The Sun News. Because the patients often require more staff supervision, the influx is straining hospital resources. Hospitals worry such patients do not receive adequate resources and staff often face the dilemma of where to send the patients once treatment is delivered.
