Proposed overhaul of medical center must make patient safety a priority

Palomar Pomerado health is in the initial phases of a significant facility expansion in Poway, CA, but experts warn that patient safety should help guide the initial designs, according to an article in the San Diego-based North County Times.The $753 million expansion project would create a new acute care facility in the area. Experts said that the hospital must seriously consider how beds are allocated in the facility to best offer flexibility of services and increase patient safety.
Once the initial design is locked in, the opportunities to affect patient safety decrease, said the critics. Some question whether the hospital needs all of the proposed 600 beds in the expansion, suggesting the space would be better served by other services. Others questioned the size of the women's health center included in the plans.
