Poll: Public supports pay-for-performance for docs if it means cheaper healthcare

A Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Wall Street Journal shows the public's appetite for pay-for-performance for physicians is moderate, but interest jumps significantly when the scheme is connected to lower health care costs.In general, less than half (38%) of those surveyed online are interested in a pay-for-performance clause for physicians, but two-thirds of respondents were positive on health care plans that offer fewer doctors, certifies that those physicians provide above-average care and charges lower premiums, the survey found.
The survey also lists specific metrics that the public supports in measuring a physician's effectiveness.
