New group to study why some patients suffer serious illness when taking new medications

A new group to study why some patients feel the effects of new medications more than others was announced recently by the Food and Drug Administration and seven major drug makers, including Johnson and Johnson and Pfizer, reports the Chicago Tribune. The newly formed International Serious Adverse Event Consortium will study a large amount of reports from doctors concerning drug interactions among their patients in hopes of finding genetic clues into why some drugs produce adverse events.

Drug companies in the past have spent most of their time and resources on developing and testing new drugs, and not on exploring why some people taking drugs are more prone to adverse events. The International Serious Adverse Event Consortium hopes to tackle this issue and in the process, prevent 150,000 deaths annually.
