NJ bill would establish pharmacy panel to improve safety

A bill working its way through New Jersey's state house would create a task force to review and recommend changes to how pharmacies dispense medications, according to a report in the Gloucester County Times.

The Medication Error Prevention Task Force would review ways pharmacists could reduce errors in their workplace and consider new penalties for those who do make mistakes. The group would also consider educational programming for pharmacies and for the general public.

Opponents to the bill said it's a thinly-veiled attempt to require the computerization of records. Such a requirement does not necessarily improve efficiency or reduce errors if the programs involved are not properly utilized, said opponents.
