NEJM op-ed: Physicians should be trained on health costs

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

April 7, 2010

A new article in the New England Journal of Medicine is calling on physicians to become more conscious of the costs of medical care, and make that awareness a part of how they provide care.

Although most physicians are aware of the costs of providing care in a modern society, with many tests and procedures available to help treat patient, they are not acting to prevent these costs from spiraling out of control. This is due to many historical, cultural, philosophical, and structural factors within the field of medicine. However, the author, Molly Cooke, MD, implores physicians to look at how they can emphasize quality care that has some value, rather than providing all types of care for all patients.
