Surescripts, the nation's largest e-prescribing network, announced yesterday that Massachusetts ranks highest in the nation when it comes to e-prescribing, reports The Boston Globe. The annual review of the number of prescriptions sent electronically in each state revealed that 20.5% of prescriptions were e-prescriptions last year in Massachusetts, or 6.8 million, up from 2.3% in 2005. Following Massachusetts in the top five were Rhode Island, Michigan, Nevada, and Delaware.
Surescripts introduced a new category to its annual award as a way to recognize those states that have improved most in terms of e-prescribing. Vermont and Tennessee ranked at numbers one and two respectively for most improved.
E-prescribing is linked with fewer medication errors, improved efficiency, and cost savings.
