Maine hospitals to join statewide effort

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

September 28, 2005

The state of Maine has introduced the Safety Star program, a statewide program similar to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) "100,000 Lives" campaign. Participating hospitals would agree to follow 28 specific safe practices to help reduce medical errors, according to an article in the Portsmouth Herald.

Hospitals that commit to the program and make clear advances will receive Safety Star certification. The practices include rapid response teams, medication reconciliation, and other proven safety strategies.

Hospitals can apply to join the program this fall, and certifications are expected to start in spring 2006.
