Joint Commission releases revised medication reconciliation goal

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

December 15, 2010

The Joint Commission recently released a revised medication reconciliation National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG). Formerly NPSG.08.01.01, the new goal, NPSG.03.06.01, relaxes many of the older goal's requirements, which many hospitals argued were too prescriptive and difficult to implement.

The changes affect the ambulatory, behavioral health care, critical access hospital, home care, hospital, long term care, and office-based surgery accreditation programs. The goal is effective July 1, 2011.

For more information, view the new NPSG on The Joint Commission website.
