How Doctors Think debated

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

April 11, 2007

Jerome Groopman's new book, How Doctors Think, is the topic of an online debate between Groopman, MD and Darshak Sanghavi, MD, on Slate.com.

Sanghavi asked whether Groopman's focus on the physician's cognitive process is off the mark in terms of improving patient safety. Healthcare should focus its resources on improving systems and teamwork, he wrote.

Groopman, in response, said system change is important, but that physicians still largely operate on their own, even in the context of a team approach to healthcare. Besides, poor cognitive ability leads to errors in team care as well.

The debate will include updates every day this week.
