Hospitals go on offense against MRSA

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

May 16, 2007

Hospitals are starting to take a hard line in enforcing protections against the spread of MRSA, according to a Washington Post article.

Examples cited in the article include clergy members wiping down Bibles between patient visits, caregivers using plastic coverings for paperwork when transporting patients, and increased handwashing and disposable glove and gown use.

These efforts are relatively new in the U.S., but they are common in Europe, where hospitals take a "seek and destroy" approach to fighting MRSA and other superbugs, according to the Post.
