Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt has announced a national collaboration to create an Internet-based network that would allow healthcare providers to more easily transfer medical records, according to an HHS press release.HHS has also issued four requests for proposals for companies to help design a standards-based program for the records, which would enhance interoperability between programs. The goal is for the market to create the best EMR system possible within 10 years. President Bush recently asked that all medical records go electric in the next decade.
Leavitt said a cohesive system to transfer patient information must have security protections, but ultimately will help decrease medical errors by quickly providing hospitals with accurate information.
