The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is publishing a series of reports about healthcare success stories, and the first one concerns the Keystone Project in Michigan.
The series is being published as evidence that healthcare reform can be successful, said secretary of HHS Kathleen Sebelius. The Keystone Project lowered rates of catheter-associated bloodstream infections in the state of Michigan and saved 1,500 lives as well as $200 million within the first 18 months. A part of this project involved using a checklist to remind caregivers the steps to take when properly inserting a catheter. This project has since become a national initiative that is currently underway.
