HHS releases plan for reducing HAIs
Patient Safety Monitor Alert
January 14, 2009
In an effort to reduce the staggering number of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) found in the U.S. hospital system, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has set a five-year plan that establishes goals and action points to use in preventing HAIs. Both short- and long-term objectives have been identified in this plan, which is available on the HHS' Office of Public Health and Science Web site. HHS estimates that in 2002, 99,000 patients died as the result of HAIs.
The public will be allowed to comment on HHS Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections until February 6, 2009.
