On June 18, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology released its final rule regarding health information technology certification. The final rule is for temporary certification of electronic health records and describes what those organizations authorized to grant certification must do.

The rule was released in advance of October, when those healthcare facilities using electronic health records (EHR) will be eligible for incentive payments. However, to receive those payments, EHR users must purchase and use certified technology.
