HHS awards contracts to nine health information exchanges around country

Secretary Mike Leavitt of the Department of Human and Health Services (HHS) announced on October 5 that it was awarding $25.2 million worth of contracts to nine health information exchanges (HIE) around the country. The HIEs will explore implementing a national health information network (NHIN). This plan comes as a forerunner to the proposed national electronic health record by 2014.The HIEs using the NHIN will demonstrate how easily health information can be communicated on a national level. Results will be made public at the end of the first year of using the HIEs, in September 2008.
