Surgeon burnout and depression could affect patient safety, according to the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic researchers collected data in 2008 from 7,905 surgeons in the U.S. and found that of those surgeons who worked more than 80 hours a week, 50% had symptoms pertaining to burnout, while 40% were depressed, according to a HealthDay article about the study.
