FBI investigates fake surveyor incidents
Patient Safety Monitor Alert
April 27, 2005
Reports of fake JCAHO surveyors in hospitals across the country has prompted an investigation by the FBI, reports the Washington Post. While the imposters were stopped in all three facilities they attempted to infiltrate, law enforcement agencies want to know why the attempts were made. Homeland Security has also been notified, although there have been no indications that terrorists are trying to infiltrate hospitals, according to the Post.
Late this February in Boston and Los Angeles, well-dressed, middle-aged people presented themselves as JCAHO inspectors, flashed badges, and asked to be let into the building. They fled when security asked more questions. At a Detroit hospital in March, a woman was found in a maternity ward and identified herself as an inspector. She fled the scene when pressed by staff members.
The JCAHO said it will send all surveyors into hospitals with a signed letter from the organization's executive vice president.
