Eisenberg Patient Safety Awards announced

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and National Quality Forum announced the winners of the 2005 Joseph M. Eisenberg Patient Safety Awards on Sept. 19. There were winners in three of the four categories.
  • The Individual achievement award was given to Audrey L. Nelson, PhD, RN, for her work to improve care for disabled patients.
  • Maryland Patient Safety Center received the award for innovation by a state or regional organization for its work developing a public-private approach to reporting errors. The center has also used its influence to help steer policy at the state level to help organizations learn from reported medical errors.
  • Meridian Health in New Jersey and Sentara Health in Virginia and North Carolina both received awards for innovation by a local organization. Meridian was cited for using evidence-based best practices in its computerized physician order entry system. Sentara received the award for its thorough error reduction work and implementation of a safety culture.
