After weeks of speculation, President Obama officially nominated Donald Berwick, MD, for the position of the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, reports The New York Times. Berwick is currently president of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), an organization known throughout the healthcare community for its work in quality improvement and creation of innovative solutions for patient care. Leaders of the IHI released statements concerning Berwick's nomination.

A senate committee hearing is required to confirm Berwick as administrator of CMS, which has not had a permanent leader since 2006. Berwick will likely be questioned about his ideas for carrying out the healthcare reform legislation that passed last month.
