Doctors must use tamper-proof prescription pads by April 1

As of April 1, 2008, any written Medicaid prescriptions must be written on tamper-proof prescription pads, according to federal law. This means one attempt to prevent copying, counterfeiting, and/ or modification of a prescription, reports American Medical News. By October 1, 2008, written Medicaid prescriptions must attempt to prevent all three of these offenses. Physician groups say they are ready for this law to come into effect.The restrictions do not apply to faxed or phoned prescriptions, electronic prescriptions, or prescriptions that are paid for by a Medicaid managed care organization. The American College of Physicians is encouraging its members to comply with all three methods of prevention earlier, to get ready for the October 1 deadline.
