Department of Defense halfway toward total electronic medical recordkeeping

Patient Safety Monitor Alert

December 12, 2005

The Department of Defense (DOD) has announced it is more than 50% of the way toward implementing its electronic medical recordkeeping. The Web-based system will allow hospitals and forward medical stations to communicate and share information, according to a report by Government Computer News.

The new system replaces an older electronic system and makes information available on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week schedule. Information on the new system will be standardized, so the same data can be used for various purposes and in different locations.

The Department of Health and Human Services is examining the DOD program to see what portions could be used for a future national medical database and information network.
