Hospitals that report quality data to Medicare will receive a bigger payment increase in 2006, according to a press release from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.Under the new plan, reporting hospitals will receive a 3.7% increase in inpatient reimbursement payments, while other hospitals will receive a 3.4% increase. The staggered increase schedule was outlined in the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, according to the release.
The tiered repayment approach was designed to spur voluntary quality reporting through Medicare. The CMS said it expects the vast majority of hospitals to qualify for the higher rate.
