CMS adds three additional conditions to its no-pay list

In its inpatient prospective payment rule issued last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) included three additions to CMS’s list of eight “no-pay” preventable conditions. The new conditions are:
- Surgical site infections following certain elective procedures, including certain orthopedic surgeries, and bariatric surgery for obesity
- Certain manifestations of poor control of blood sugar levels
- Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism following total knee replacement and hip replacement procedures
The additional conditions bring the total number to 11. Hospitals will not be paid additionally by CMS as of October 1, 2008 for any of these conditions. The CMS also added 13 new quality measures around which hospitals must report, bringing the total number to 42.
