The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended on Monday that healthcare workers be first to receive the vaccine for the H1N1 flu, reports The Wall Street Journal Health Blog.
In order to maintain a functioning healthcare system, it's vital that healthcare workers be healthy and able to treat those who are sick, said the CDC. The CDC also recommended that pregnant women, people older than six months with a chronic illness (asthma and obesity were listed), healthy elderly people, healthy children, and healthy adults between the ages of 50 and 64.
The CDC recommended that obese people be vaccinated early because its been observed that people with a body mass index higher than 30 have had been more severely infected with H1N1.
