AHRQ releases report on patient safety culture

The AHRQ released its Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture 2008 Comparative Database Report, which is an update of the 2007 version of the report. The 2008 report examines data from 519 hospitals and 160,167 hospital staff members. Overall, the areas of most strength from most respondents included teamwork within units and the overall perception of safe patient care. The areas upon which facilities could improve include the need for a nonpunitive response after an error has occurred and the reporting of near-miss or medical errors.
The survey is designed to be administered on an annual basis, or between every 18 and 24 months. Completing this survey allows hospitals to assess their own culture of safety, compare it to other facilities, and point out any changes over time.
